Spiced wine or cider will fill your home with the welcoming scent of warm spices and citrus. It’s as easy as stirring a few ingredients together on the stove or in the slow cooker, and it is guaranteed to make any event merrier. Our easy to use spice bags are made with a traditional blend of spices and brown sugar cubes.
Mulled Red Wine
- 1 bottle red wine (choose something dry and full bodies like Cabernet Sauvignon or Syrah)
- 1 spice bag
- 1 cup orange juice or apple cider
- Optional garnish; orange slices, cranberries, cinnamon sticks
Stovetop method: In a large pan over a medium heat, combine the wine, juice and the spice bag. do not remove spices from the bag submerse the whole bag. (However if you would prefer a less sweet taste then remove the sugar cubes from the bag and add later if desired). Bring to a simmer, not a boil, then reduce heat to low. Simmer gently for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Crockpot method:. Combine the wine, juice and the spice bag, do not remove spices from the bag, submerse the whole bag. (However if you would prefer a less sweet taste then remove the sugar cubes from the bag and add later if desired). Cook on low until warm, 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on your slow cooker, then use the “Keep Warm” setting. If you do not have a warm setting, alternate between “Low” and “Off.”
Serve warm by ladling it into heatproof glasses,or mugs then garnish if desired .
For something stronger, add liquor, such as brandy or spiced rum, if you prefer it less alcoholic then simply increase the orange juice or apple cider. The key to the perfect mulled wine is patience, let everything mull away and warm up gently so the flavors have time to mingle with the wine.
Mulled White Wine
- 1 bottle dry white wine
- 1 spice bag
- 1 cup water
Follow the directions for Mulled Red Wine adding water instead of juice. Optional garnish: orange, lemon or lime slices, cranberries, star anise, rosemary.
Spiced Apple Cider
- 1 gallon Apple Cider
- 1 spice bag (remove sugar cubes to reduce sweetness)
